Mia Stokes is a Houston-based speaker, storyteller, returning citizen, and founder of The Long Table who brings audiences more than a story of survival. Her life is a firsthand study of what it takes to confront addiction, accept accountability, address root trauma, and rebuild identity, stability, and vision after incarceration. Mia speaks from the intersection of personal transformation and systemic reality—giving audiences language for both the internal work required to change a life and the external barriers people must navigate when they come home.

Before prison, Mia built a multidisciplinary career across media, entertainment, live events, marketing, mentorship, and community engagement. Her experience began behind the scenes in urban promotions with Interscope Records and expanded into event hosting, on-camera interviews, and media coverage, including work with d-mars.com, where she discovered her talent for speaking with business professionals, entrepreneurs, and community-engaged warriors about their accomplishments. She also developed experience through featured live performances, mentoring at Texas Southern University’s Jesse H. Jones School of Business as an alum, and professional roles spanning operations, events, marketing, membership development, education, and client engagement across legal, financial, and community settings, as well as nonprofits such as 100 Black Men and the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE).

But beneath the professional accomplishments, Mia was battling alcoholism and unresolved trauma. Her addiction contributed to decisions that ultimately led to incarceration. Prison did not erase the harm or absolve her of responsibility; it forced her to confront what achievement, performance, and survival had allowed her to avoid. During and after incarceration, Mia began addressing the trauma beneath her addiction, pursuing healing, and learning to remain present through the discomfort that accountability requires. She also taught mathematics while incarcerated, helping more than 100 women earn their High School Equivalency Diplomas and discovering that her experiences could become more than evidence against her—they could become instruction, connection, curriculum, and purpose.

Since her release in September 2024, Mia has been rebuilding in real time: reestablishing her career, becoming a mother, strengthening her personal and financial foundation, volunteering in second-chance workforce initiatives, and developing The Long Table through the City of Houston’s Turnaround Entrepreneurship Program. The Long Table is an emerging speaking and workshop enterprise designed to help justice-impacted people rebuild financial identity, understand systems that are rarely explained, and begin moving from survival toward stability, ownership, and wealth.

Organizations invite Mia into the room when they need more than motivational testimony. She translates lived experience into honest, practical conversations about addiction, trauma, accountability, incarceration, reentry, technology, financial identity, and the systems that shape whether a second chance becomes sustainable. She can speak to the person sitting in a cell, the family preparing for someone’s return, and the institution designing programs and policies—without flattening any of them into a statistic.

Mia’s story is not presented as proof that resilience alone can overcome every barrier. It is evidence of what becomes possible when resilience is joined by accountability, healing, access, information, and opportunity. She does not simply tell audiences where she has been. She helps them examine what people need, what institutions overlook, and what can be built from what remains.
